Home energy monitors like this are a valuable tool for anyone concerned energy conservation.
Home energy monitors – What are they?
Home energy monitors, first of all, it is a device that will typically monitor your electrical usage for your entire house. The large majority of them require little electrical knowledge to install, and can be done in minutes. What they do is measure the amount of electricity used by placing a clamp around the wiring leading into your electrical meter. As electricity flows into the meter through the wires, it generates a magnetic field around the main cable. This magnetic field fluctuates constantly as electricity flows back and forth because it is AC, or alternating current. Continue reading “Home Energy Monitors” »

How to Measure Watts, stay out of this for starters!
A watt is basically a unit of electricity which we will use for simplicity in this example. There are different measures of watts which include the kilowatt which is typical for home measurements, and is the equivalent of 1,000 watts. Then there is the megawatt, which is 1,000,000 watts, and is typically seen as power plant output. If we have a 100 watt light bulb on and leave it on for an hour, and if we pay 1.00 per kilowatt from our electrical utility, that would be measured by multiplying the rate of $1.00 and the light bulb watts, or 100, and divide that by a kilowatt, or 1000, it would look like this: $1.00 x 100 watts/1000 = .10. That would roughly mean that if you run a 100 watt lightbulb for one hour it would cost you 10 cents. For more advanced measurements, you can look on the appliance label and look for the power consumption in watts or kilowatts. You can calculate the cost to run that the same as we calculated the light bulbs cost.

Home Energy Monitors are a Great Power Reducing Tool!
If you wish to have a great power reducing tool, you should look into a home energy monitor. A home energy monitor gives you a real time glimpse of how much
electric power you are using, and will alert you when you are using more than normal. While they won’t guarantee you power reducing benefits, they will give you
the knowledge and ability to monitor your power usage so that you can make adjustments accordingly to you electricity usage. You need to do some of the work to reduce the amount of power consumed, but once you learn the ins and outs of your home energy monitor, it can help you to alter your power consumed and give you a great way to help cut the amount of power daily used. Some may, and in fact do scoff at the idea of a power meter that will magically reduce power consumed and lower your power average, but it does give you valuable information and insight into your average electrical usage.

Home Energy Monitors are They The Next Best Thing or Just a Fad?
Several reports are now surfacing about the home energy monitor. These reports are hinting as to the limited value of home power monitors. These studies, whether accurate or not claim that they have little if any affect on energy usage and that most of the better results were a direct result of financial incentives to those who reduced the most electrical usage. So, in essence, these reports tout home power monitors as being relatively useless. Now I am not one to be dismayed at these reports, but I also question their validity. There are several issues at stake here which are overlooked by the author of the article that I saw which drew this response. In terms of home energy meters, I agree that by themselves they are totally useless. So people purchase them, like here and that’s that. Hook them up and then go about life. The author implies that they don’t do anything and help no one save energy. I beg to disagree. You can lead a horse to water but you can’t make him drink it! That analogy is similar to a home energy meter, you can give them away, hook them up, and teach people how to use them, but will they?
Studies have shown that people using power monitors will cut down their electric bill from 5% to 50%. One reader has reduced their energy usage by about half, saving around $100/month. How much you save is a matter of how much you use now, and whether you pay attention to what the energy monitor tells you. That’s why it’s key to find the energy saving monitor that meets your needs.

How to slow electric meter down, this is an interesting concept!

How to Slow Electric Meter Down, can it be done?
How to slow electric meter down, this is an interesting concept, and would get me rich if I knew of a surefire legal way to accomplish this! Just how can I slow my electric meter down you ask? Well, to stay on the safe side of the law, you have several options at this point in time. The first one would be turn everything off and use candles and a woodstove for both cooking and heat, but in this day and age that is really not an option.
Option 2 isn’t quite so primitive and can be done legally. Fist of all, you need to invest a fair amount of cash in a solar power system, that will power your house, or at least some of it. This option is highly feasible today, and isn’t that hard to implement, but it still can be expensive. Solar power systems are going down in price and size, and in the not too distant future I can envision some real advancements in technoligies. Solar power systems are a great way to go if you have both the cash and home to implement it with.

How to Read Electrical Meter you ask?

EM 2500 Meter Reader
There are currently quite a few electrical meters on the market, and would take me 2 weeks 2 write about all of them and you 2 weeks to read all the instructions for learning how to read electrical meter. While some are more sophisticated than others, with a computer interface and other nice features, they basically all perform the same functions and have the same
functionalities. They also primarily have the same readouts so I won’t need to go into details on how to read your meter data for each electric meter.
For beginners, your typical home electrical meter, which is usually located outside your house or dwelling, has a number of dials on it, usually 4 or 5. If you stand straight ahead of the meter, you will be able to see them and get an accurate reading. The first dial on the right spins clockwise, the next dial to the left spins counter-clockwise, and repeats that pattern for additional dials, clockwise, counter-clockwise, clockwise, counter-clockwise and so forth. If the pointer has not crossed the 0
yet, you use the next lower number. Typically they round down, so even if your dial is almost on nine and the next number is only eight, then it will be 88. The whole number is read from left to right, just as in any reading. Most newer models of standard home electrical meters have a digital readout without dials. Those are easier to read both for you and for the meter man.
